Directed by Olivier Schneider, “GTMax” is a French-language action thriller that follows a family trying to save their business amid mounting financial difficulties. It leads Soelie, the daughter, to criminal activities that she must find a way out of.
What happens in ‘GTMax’ on Netflix?
“GTMax” on Netflix begins with a bike chase where police officer, Lucas (Thibaut Evrard) and his team try to catch a bunch of thieves but to no avail. As it happens, in another part of the town, Daniel (Gerard Lanvin) and his children, Soelie (Ava Baya) and Michael (Just Riadh) gear up for a race on the motorcycle track they own. Daniel is a celebrated motorcycle racer who once earned a legendary status. However, he eventually left the career as he lost his wife, Clara who was a revered motorcycle racer herself.
In the present, Daniel expects Michael to win the race but does not specify why in particular. Only after Michael loses does he reveal the financial problems they are facing, which forces him to sell their business and the stunning motorcycle collection. Soelie finds it hard to hard to digest since her mother built the entire collection with Daniel and it serves as a beautiful memory for the family. She understands the financial issues but doesn’t want to lose them. This desire pushes her to the reckless world of crime when an opportunity knocks on their door.
How do Michael & Soelie get caught in the world of crime?
Michael gets asked by his close friend, Yassine (Samir Decazza) to work on a temporary gig that pays him a significant amount. All Michael needs to do is test an assembled motorcycle to check if it is suitable for racing. Michael is all game for it but Soelie isn’t. She knows Yassine as a fellow racer, who also trained with them in the recent past. So, she does not want Michael to get involved in this gig. Since Michael insists on taking it, Soelie joins him as his mechanic. With him, she meets Elyas (Jalil Lespert), who runs the operation, and Theo (Jeremie Laheurte), his mechanic.

During her brief introduction, Soelie shows her expertise in scooters and motorcycles, which impresses Elyas. So, after Michael’s job is done, Elyas offers her another opportunity. The catch is that it is illegal. Initially, Soelie refuses to participate in it. However, back home, she gets reminded of her father’s financial woes, which makes her change her mind. She eventually accepts Elyas’ offer and joins Theo in developing their new vehicles. These motorcycles are supposed to be used for a heist of some precious diamonds. Around this time, Yassine gets arrested for a robbery unrelated to Elyas’ operation. It annoys Elyas since Yassine’s stupidity brings cops to his doorstep and puts his entire operation in jeopardy.
Why does Soelie never participate in motorcycle races?
When Soelie starts working for Elyas, Theo initially sees her as a threat to his position and does not trust her. However, he soon realizes how skilled she is and gets fond of her company. During this time, he and Elyas notice Soelie refusing to get on a motorcycle herself. Soelie refuses to clarify as to why. However, after a point, she tells Theo the truth about a traumatic incident from her past. After learning about her mother, Clara’s unfortunate fate, Soelie drove her motorcycle and got herself in a severe accident that made her hospitalized for a while.
Although Soelie recovered from the injuries, the incident left a scar on her mind and made her never ride a motorcycle herself or participate in the races. Instead, she helped Michael with the lessons to get better at it. Theo empathizes with her and hopes she gets the help she needs but doesn’t force her to be on a motorcycle. Meanwhile, police officer Lucas asks Yassine about Elyas and his operation. Turns out, the police were interested in exposing Elyas’ criminal activities rather than bringing Yassine to justice.
Does Soelie ever ride a motorcycle again?
Lucas sends Yassine back to Elyas’ garage with a tracking device. Shortly before reaching there, Yassine informs Michael of another opportunity to make a quick buck. So, he arrives at Elyas’ garage shortly after Yassine does. Elyas and Theo wonder how the cops let Yassine go considering the criminal charges. Elyas suspects Yassine hopes to expose them. So, he shoots Yassine dead, frames Michael for the murder, and forces Soelie to participate in his next operation. She reluctantly gets back on the motorcycle to protect her family.

What lies in Soelie’s future?
At the end of “GTMax,” Soelie and Theo gear up for the heist with Elyas. The duo manages to get hold of the diamonds. After a minor accident, Theo leaves Soelie with the stolen goods. As it happens, Lucas and his team of cops keep following the group of thieves. So, Elyas diverts Lucas to help Soelie and Theo carry out his plan. Shortly after, he gets in a physical fight with Lucas and knocks him down. Soelie meets him but does not act according to his plan.
As it turns out, she betrays him for how he treated her younger brother. For the same reason, Theo betrays him and joins Soelie in her plan against him. So, the ending of “GTMax” shows Elyas paying for his sins because of Soelie and Theo’s plan against him. In the movie’s final moments, we see Soelie enter a race as Lucas watches her from a distance. He suspects she is one of the robbers involved in Elyas’ plan but has no proof against her. Daniel does not expose her either, which keeps her and Michael safe.
