Facilities Management safety and compliance tip.TEST AND TAG.All testing and tagging of electrical equipment, including RCD’s (safety switch) must be undertaken by a competent person at least every 12 months.Issues that the technicians are looking for when conducting the testing.Frayed wires or cordsSafety switches that don't tripFaults in the wiringDamaged equipment caused by moisture or exposure to harsh elementsCurrent leakageEarthing system faultsAfter the inspection is completed, the technician will place a visual test tag label on the tested equipment. The tag with have the following information.1)Who performed the test.2)The date the test was performed.3)When the equipment needs to be retested. Finally a report of the test results and findings shall be provided for your records.

A safe system of work is not just a document, but a practical and effective way of working that reduces the risk of accidents and injuries. It should reflect the reality of what is done on-site and comply with the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989. 📑One of the key aspects of a safe system of work is to identify and assess the potential hazards to others. This includes consulting with our clients, colleagues, and experts as needed. The steps should also be documented that need to be taken to work safely and communicate them clearly to everyone involved. Another crucial element is to implement and monitor a safe system of work. This means providing adequate training, instruction, supervision, and control to staff. It also means selecting and using the right tools and equipment for the job and following any safety rules and procedures. If necessary, also display warnings and notices to alert others of the hazards. ⚠️Of course, a safe system of work is not static. Electrical Safety BulletinsElectrical Safety Bulletins (ESB) that can be downloaded and used as reference documents with an employer's Electrical Safety Program.In the hierarchy or risk control methods documentation is a lower order risk control method, but critically important to achieving and confirming an expected residual risk level and positively influencing the likelihood of occurrence. I find that in many cases there is limited to no documentation related to electrical equipment re-energization. For planned maintenance on low or high voltage electrical equipment an Electrically Safe Work Condition would be established. It is critical that before re-energizing the Person-in-Charge (PIC) complete a detailed inspection that may also be validated by an additional Qualified Electrical Worker Low or High Voltage. The attached Electrical Safety Bulletin includes a simple Pre-Energization Checklist that needs to be included in an Energized Electrical Job Safety Planning (EEJSP) form and utilized before electrical equipment is re-energized.If you review the table and believe additional questions should be added please add a comment to this post.The TW Becker Electrical Safety Consulting Inc. Toolbox Talk: Electrical Substation SafetyIntroductionElectrical substations are critical areas where electrical energy is distributed to operational assets within facilities. However, they pose significant safety risks due to the presence of high voltages, substantial incident energy, and electrical equipment at ground level. This toolbox talk will cover the essential safety precautions to follow when working in or around substations.Key HazardsHigh Voltages: Substations operate with extremely high voltages, which can be life-threatening.Incident Energy: The potential for explosions and severe burns due to high incident energy.Ground-Level Equipment: Electrical equipment is often located at ground level, increasing the risk of accidental contact.Safety PrecautionsMaintain Safe Distances:Qualified Personnel: Maintain a minimum allowable distance, which can be just a few feet, depending on the task.Non-Qualified Personnel: Maintain a distance of at least 10 feet or more from substation equipment.Assessment: Before entering a substation, qualified personnel should assess the work area to ensure that the required distance is maintained.Transformer Safety:Explosion Risk: Transformers, which contain oil in sealed tanks, pose an explosion risk if there is an internal fault.Vigilance:Heat Signs: Be alert to signs of excessive heat, tank expansion, or oil leaks on transformers.Unusual Sounds: Listen for any uncommon sounds within the substation or transformer, as they may indicate an imminent failure.Oil Leaks: Check for fresh oil leaks, which could signal a developing problem.Engage Only if Qualified:Proper Qualification: Only engage with electrical equipment if you are properly qualified to do so.Equipment Condition: Ensure that the equipment is in a safe state before starting any work.Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Always wear the appropriate PPE for the task, including insulated gloves, face shields, and flame-resistant clothing.ConclusionWorking in or around electrical substations requires strict adherence to safety protocols due to the high risks involved.
