Today, June 25th marks the Day of the Seafarer for 2024.Gee, they truly deserve more than one day of being honoured. This year’s theme is look at seafarers' contribution to making the maritime sector a safer workplace.(This makes me pull that awkward face that says “really?”)I think that we knew from the moment that the Galaxy Leader was hijacked back in November 2023 that the entire landscape for seafarers had changed. To this day, the 25 crew members from this vessel are still being held and have now been detained for over 7 months. Certainly, seafarers faced dangers in the past, but they were nothing compared to the sophisticated attacks occurring today.Life changing incidents are happening around the world causing more and more stress to seafarers who are now involved in a war that has nothing to do with them. There is some good news on this day, with the 21 crew members from the container ship Dali, allowed to fly home.According to MarineTraffic the Dali has departed Baltimore for the first time since the containership lost power and struck the Francis Scott Key Bridge on March 26.Seafarers are often forgotten, yet it is crucial to remember that they are just people, like you and me. There is a call to action for the maritime industry and regulatory bodies to improve their response protocols for seafarers in distress. By prioritising their well-being and expediting necessary decisions, we can demonstrate our commitment to those who keep global trade moving, even in these challenging times.

Yes. Hijackings, missile attacks, more extreme unpredictable weather, 24/7 operations, poor wages & conditions for many...A life on the ocean wave is not so great despite advances in technology & safety. 🛳 ⛴ 😧

I would like to wish all seafarers a happy and safe 'Day of the Seafarer'. Today we recognize the enormous contributions you make to our way of life. Through the dangers of geopolitics and piracy, you continue to feed, energize, and drive world trade as only 'key workers' can. Those who have sailed understand the unique stresses you face and the skills needed to do a safe and professional job. My #safetytipsatsea: If you are unsure - about anything - ask for help. Ask your crew mates, and ask your team ashore. A simple question can save lives.

https://lnkd.in/eJRRi4w3Today marks the 14th annual International Day of the Seafarer and it comes at a time when the lure of a career at sea is being severely challenged. The 2020s are proving to be a very hard period to entice people to work at sea. Starting with the pandemic, which forced many thousands of seafarers to work in taxing conditions for far longer than agreed contracts, crews have also had to face rising cases of piracy, wars in the Black and Red Seas with many also being sent to work on the so-called dark tanker fleet where safety standards have been in the spotlight.Cases of crew abandonment have also hit record highs in recent years while increasing discussion of automation and autonomous vessels have made some potential seafarers question the longevity of a career at sea.

🌊 Honoring the Guardians of the Sea on the Day of the Seafarer 🌊 Today, on June 25th, we celebrate the Day of the Seafarer, "On this special day, let's recall seafarers' compromises to support and contribute to global trade." Extended Time Away: Long months at sea, away from family and friends, often lead to significant personal and emotional challenges. Harsh Working Conditions: Seafarers face extreme weather, physical labor, and the constant threat of piracy and other maritime hazards. Health Risks: Limited access to medical care and the demanding nature of the job pose serious health risks.Adaptability: Constantly adapting to different time zones, cultures, and regulations requires resilience and flexibility.Regulatory and Compliance Pressures: Adherence to international maritime laws and regulations, which can be complex and frequently updated, adds to the stress.#ThankYouSeafarers #SupportOurSeafarers#MaritimeIndustry#DayOfTheSeafarer

As a mariner that stopped sailing after 5 years, from my experience, money is only one factor that is keeping younger sailors from continuing a career at sea. Monitoring the mental health of sailors has not been a priority within the industry. Unfortunately, that is leading to extreme measures taken by the sailors. It is all too common to leave sailors onboard vessels well beyond their due dates. There is no connection between the sailors and the shoreside personnel, often leaving sailors feeling abandoned or as "just a number". There is no "thank you" after spending months at sea, just an order to move on to the next port or ship. The article is also correct about the lack of opportunity for mariners to shift to shoreside positions.I do miss going to sea and feeling that sense of accomplishment. I might go back if I know that mental health of sailors is a company priority, and if I can determine better shoreside transition opportunites.

Seafarer happiness is a crucial aspect of the maritime industry. Unfortunately, the seafarer happiness index has declined in Q4 2023, with crew members expressing concerns over escalating piracy and war risk threats. It's essential to prioritize the safety and well-being of seafarers, who play a vital role in the shipping industry. #shipsandshipping #maritime #shipping #vessels #ships #maritimesafety #seafarers Link to the article: https://lnkd.in/dA87dVeX

Relationship between a ship and seafarer? The relationship between a ship and a seafarer is symbiotic. Seafarers operate and navigate the ship, ensuring its safety and functionality, while the ship provides a means of transportation and a living environment for the seafarers during their voyages. It's a collaborative partnership crucial for maritime activities and trade.Seafarers, often comprising a diverse crew with various skills, work together to manage the ship's operations, maintenance, and safety. The ship, in turn, serves as both their workplace and temporary residence, fostering a unique camaraderie among the crew members. This interdependence highlights the essential connection between seafarers and the vessels they navigate, forming the backbone of maritime endeavors worldwide. The relationship extends beyond mere functionality. Seafarers often develop a deep affinity for their ships, considering them not just as vessels but as homes at sea. The challenges of maritime life create a shared bond among crew members, as they rely on one another for support in the face of isolation, unpredictable weather, and the vastness of the open ocean. This shared experience creates a unique sense of community and mutual reliance between seafarers and their ships.#maritime #seaman #sailor #seafarer #merchantnavy #marineindustry #lifeatsea #supreetsachdeva
