Through the dangers of geopolitics and piracy, you continue to feed, energize, and drive world trade as only 'key workers' can. Those who have sailed understand the unique stresses you face and the skills needed to do a safe and professional job. My #safetytipsatsea: If you are unsure - about anything - ask for help. https://lnkd.in/eJRRi4w3Today marks the 14th annual International Day of the Seafarer and it comes at a time when the lure of a career at sea is being severely challenged.The 2020s are proving to be a very hard period to entice people to work at sea. Starting with the pandemic, which forced many thousands of seafarers to work in taxing conditions for far longer than agreed contracts, crews have also had to face rising cases of piracy, wars in the Black and Red Seas with many also being sent to work on the so-called dark tanker fleet where safety standards have been in the spotlight.Cases of crew abandonment have also hit record highs in recent years while increasing discussion of automation and autonomous vessels have made some potential seafarers question the longevity of a career at sea.

As a mariner that stopped sailing after 5 years, from my experience, money is only one factor that is keeping younger sailors from continuing a career at sea. Monitoring the mental health of sailors has not been a priority within the industry. Unfortunately, that is leading to extreme measures taken by the sailors. It is all too common to leave sailors onboard vessels well beyond their due dates. There is no connection between the sailors and the shoreside personnel, often leaving sailors feeling abandoned or as "just a number". There is no "thank you" after spending months at sea, just an order to move on to the next port or ship. The article is also correct about the lack of opportunity for mariners to shift to shoreside positions.I do miss going to sea and feeling that sense of accomplishment. I might go back if I know that mental health of sailors is a company priority, and if I can determine better shoreside transition opportunites.
